Jay Z, Tidal Music tangled in $3.5M royalties suit
Jay Z accused of 'stiffing' artists
A Queens drummer is taking on Jay Z, charging in a $3.5 million-plus class-action suit that the rap mogul’s new music-streaming service is stiffing him and other artists on royalties.
John Emanuele, of the band American Dollar, gripes in the Manhattan federal suit that “when defendant Shawn [‘Jay Z’] Carter purchased the Tidal Music Services in 2015, it claimed it would be the first streaming service to pay the artists.”
“Different owner, same game,” the suit snipes.
The Flushing man’s suit claims Tidal — whose partners include BeyoncĂ©, Rihanna and Kanye West, — created its 25 million-song library by “dumping” the music from independent labels without paying royalties.
Tidal refuted Emanuele’s claims, saying the company “is up to date on all royalties for the rights to the music .”
