Disbelief: Whoopi Goldberg asked how he could align himself with a man who has bashed women and made countless racist remarks

Ben Carson was attacked repeatedly by the women of The View on Thursday, who questioned how he could support Donald Trump for president given his many racial and sexist statements.

'You have aligned yourself with the man who has bashed women, made countless racist remarks - you're Ben Carson, why would you align yourself with that?' asked Whoopi Goldberg at the top of the interview.

'Well, you know, you have to look at the good and the bad. There is no perfect person,' said Carson.

'But you look at when Donald Trump first went down to the Palm Beach area, a lot of the [golf] clubs down there would not accept Jews and blacks. 

'He insisted on Jews and blacks and helped to break that open.

'So, has he said some things that I wouldn’t say or that you wouldn’t say? Of course.' 

At one point during his answer the camera cut to a visibly stunned Goldberg. 

Trump meanwhile tweeted out his displeasure with the segment and disregard for the women on the show within minutes.

Panelist Sunny Hostin, a lawyer, then jumped in, saying about Trump: 'He was also sued by the Justice Department in the 70s for not allowing black tenants into his properties and he settled with the Justice Department.

'Even though he did not admit any wrongdoing, it's very clear to us in the law that means that there was something amiss. 

'The notion that he is a fan of the African-American community is maybe off base.' 

Carson responded to this by saying of Trump; 'I have met a lot of his employees and a lot are African American and they have nothing but good things to say.'

Carson then for the second time in the interview said he liked that Trump was not 'beholden' to the political machine in Washington DC, at which point a clearly agitated Goldberg cut him off and said: 'You can say that until the cows come home, sir. 

'I'm sorry, he's a racist and he's not good for the country.'

She then said: 'You're Ben Carson! You're so much better than this!'

Carson, keeping his calm, said; And that's the very reason I'm doing this, because I'm thinking about the big picture. 

'Could I focus only on racial issues? Absolutely. Could I focus on only women's issues? Absolutely. I could look at any one little thing 

'But right now the nature of our country is at stake. We are on a precipice and we are determining what kind of nation we are going to be. A nation of, for and by the people, or a nation of the government.'

Joey Behar then asked how Carson could support Trump after he compared him to a child molester. 

'If it were about me, I would be offended. But it's about America. We have to save this nation.'

Behar tried again, saying: But he's a liar. Unless you say that he's a child molester, then he's a liar. Do you want a liar for the presidency?'

Carson responded by saying; 'Tell me a politician who doesn't tell lies.' 

The topic then moved on to Ted Cruz's wife Heidi, who Trump retweeted an unflattering photo of Wednesday night.

When asked how he felt about this, Carson said: 'I do not condone any of that. It is not an endorsement of anything anyone has said or done with their lives.'

Behar then asked if it was right for Trump to say there would be riots if he wad not chosen as the Republican nominee at the convention.

Carson brushed the comment off, saying: 'That's really not the point.'

He then said of rioting: 'People on the right don't do that, people on the left do that.'

At this point Goldberg jumped in again to speak about Trump's comments about Heidi Cruz, saying: 'If he had spoken to your wife the way he had spoken to some of these women, would you take that, sir?'

Carson responded by saying: 'Let me tell you something. When you’re very nice, when you’re very respectful, you talk about the real issues and not get into all of these issues, where does it get you? It gets you where it got me. Nowhere.'

Goldberg again was visibly shocked to her Carson's response. 

'Is that what this is about? It can't be about that,' said Goldberg. 

'Here’s my point. He and some of the other politicians, they do what people want. They say what people want to hear,' said Carson.

'What I have to do is look at who is most likely to oppose the ruling class that is ruining our country.'

'That’s how Hitler got in, sir,' said Goldberg.

'That’s how Hitler got in.'

Cool and collected: Carson on the other hand thanked the woman for having him on the show

At the end of the program, after Carson had left, host Paula Faris said that the panel had clearly been unfair while speaking to Carson.

She also said they had not been as hard when they interviewed other politicians or candidates on the program. 

Goldberg looked at her in disbelief, saying that if someone is a racist she has every right to ask them about that, and the other women on the panel all seemed to agree with her.

Faris then told Trump he had an open invitation to come on, at which point Behar said he had already told them he would only appear on the show if they said nice things about him. 

Trump clearly heard what was happening as he chimed in on Twitter after Carson was done writing: '@TheView T.V. show, which is failing so badly that it will soon be taken off the air, is constantly asking me to go on. I TELL THEM "NO".'

He later wrote; 'Explain how the women on The View, which is a total disaster since the great Barbara Walters left, ever got their jobs. @abc is wasting time.' 

Trump also retweeted an individual on Twitter who wrote: 'They're all brain-dead puppets with skeletons in their closet. I say you go on and destroy them all".' 

Carson meanwhile wrote on Twitter after the interview: 'Thank you @TheView for having me on. Though we disagree on politics, only in America do we have platforms to discuss those differences.'
