More than 10 women from Vietnam who were married to men from a village in Fujian province have vanished on the same day, according to People's Daily Online reports.
It's a startling trend as an increasing numbers of men in China are paying large sums of money to marry women from Vietnam - only for them to leave without warning.

According to Chinese media, most of the women left Nan'an village on February 16 and upon learning of their escape, the only two remaining Vietnamese wives also disappeared a few days later.
The total count is now 17.
Some of the women had been married for six months while others had been in the village for just days.
A couple of these women were already pregnant.
They had all been introduced to the village via a matchmaker with each of the men paying up to 60,000 Yuan (£6,503 or $7,100).
None of the marriages were formally registered.
Aaron, 28, was the first person from the town to marry a woman from Vietnam. He says the first six months of marriage was like a dream.

She reportedly adapted to life in China well, even finding a job working in a factory. However one day she said she was thirsty and wanted to buy water. She left the house and never returned.
A man surnamed Peng, who was married to a woman from the group, said he was surprised by her actions.
He said that she was pregnant with a baby and she referred to the man as her husband and said she loved him. Now Peng is angry and has vowed to burn all of her personal items.
According to Aaron, since his grandmother's generation, the village has more males than females. He said that every year there are around 12 men to only two or three women.

A disproption in men and wome of marriagable age, there is a dearth of eligible single ladies. Men in China are finding it increasingly difficult to find a wife spouses especially in rural areas.
Many of these rural bachelors are opting for mail order brides from abroad, from countries like Vietnam and Laos. Often this is because the cost of marrying the mail order brides is mmuch cheaper than paying the bride price typically demanded by a Chinese family.
Villagers now think that the marriages were scams organised by a matchmaker who profited from the deals. The case has been reported to the local police.
However, this is not an isolated case. According to The Epoch Times, on February 18th, men in Zhongxin, also in Fujian province, were shocked to find their Vietnamese wives had disappeared. Many of the men had been married for less than a year. None of them had been heard from so far.
