Adam Dominiak, 41, found guilty of murder of Szymon Kalita, 32
He inflicted more than 70 injuries and neighbours heard victim's screams
Dominiak, from Southhampton, has been jailed for minimum of 22 years
Adam
Dominiak, 41, from Southampton, was found guilty at Winchester Crown
Court of the murder of Szymon Kalita by inflicting more than 70 injuries
using a hammer, screwdriver and a knife.
During
the prolonged attack, Mr Kalita's high-pitched screams could be heard
by neighbours as Dominiak battered him in the flat they shared.
Dominiak
tried to decapitate Mr Kalita, 32, to make sure he was dead and, as he
was doing it, texted his friends to let them know what he was up to.
He then left Mr Kalita to die while he sat in his garden and Googled 'how to clean up blood'.
The court was told that Dominiak was arrested after police were called to his flat on May 4 last year, where they found Mr Kalita suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead in hospital.
A jury took two-and-a-half-hours to convict Dominiak of murder.
The trial at the same court heard Mr Kalita had been staying with Dominiak at his flat, in the weeks leading up to his death.

A chilling CCTV image captured the pair walking side-by-side together on a pavement shortly before the attack.
The pair, both Polish nationals, had been to a 48-hour alcohol and drug house party before returning to the flat.
It was there where Dominiak launched an attack on his pal without a motive.
He
used a hammer, a screwdriver, a knife and his own feet to savage Mr
Kalita, leaving him with more than 70 wounds and broken ribs which had
punctured his lungs.
Dominiak tried to decapitate Mr
Kalita, 32, to make sure he was dead and, as he was doing it, texted his
friends to let them know what he was up to saying 'I'm just cutting a
head off with a blunt knife' (not actual text pictured)
It was seven hours before emergency services were alerted and arrived, but Mr Kalita died at Southampton General Hospital.
Dominiak, a dairy packer, showed no remorse for killing his friend.
Sentencing Dominiak, Judge Keith Cutler, said: 'That assault was an unlawful and brutal one.
'You inflicted appalling injuries upon a defenceless victim.
'The
neighbours heard some of the attack. They heard the aggression in your
voice and also the sounds of your victim in pain screaming as he
received the injuries.
'It was a prolonged and savage assault.
'It lasted at least 15 minutes. Perhaps you were enjoying inflicting pain.
The trial heard Mr Kalita had been
staying with Dominiak at his flat, in the weeks leading up to his death.

'Your actions border on being described as sadistic. You left him to die slowly over the next seven hours.'
Dominiak, who denied murder, claimed he acted in self-defence and said he was too intoxicated to intend to cause harm.
Detective
Constable Bradley Wanless of Hampshire police, said: 'Dominiak carried
out a shocking, brutal and prolonged attack resulting in Szymon
receiving more than 70 separate injuries.
'During the attack Dominiak even texted friends telling them what he was doing to Szymon.
'I
would like to acknowledge the bravery of Szymon's parents, his wider
family and friends throughout this investigation and subsequent trial,
and I hope the result here today goes some way to giving them some
closure.
'Lastly,
I take this opportunity to recognise the efforts of the uniformed
officers and paramedics who were first at the scene, as well as the
medical staff at Southampton General Hospital for their determined
attempts in trying to save the life of Szymon, who was so badly injured
by a man he believed to be his friend.'
